Completely unrelated to most everything I've been blogging about for the past however many hours now...
Can I just say that I LOVE Julie Taymor?! Really love her stuff!
I think the first time I ever saw her work was Frida. Pretty much as soon as I watched it, I loved it, and not just because I love Frida Kahlo. The way Taymor connected Frida's paintings to her life was flawless. The way the story was weaved together with the art was inspiring. The things she chose to highlight about Frida's independent and rebellious spirit was brutally honest.
A few years later, I found a book about her art and films and was amazed at the attention to detail she has and the authenticity she strives for in everything she does.
This is probably most evident in the Broadway production of The Lion King which she directed and also did costume design and mask/puppet co-design for. I've seen footage about how important it was to her that the musical use aspects of African art, music, language, and culture in order to be more authentic. She also changed the gender of Rafiki from male to female to make sure that there was a stronger female lead in the show, as there weren't any in the movie.
Then there's Across the Universe, the movie musical inspired by the music of the Beatles. I think I've said quite a bit about the movie on this blog, but let me just reiterate that this is one of my favorite movies. I just get caught up in the colors and the imagery and, of course, the music. I love it!
I know there are others out there who don't care much for Julie Taymor, but I'll love her forever. I'll even forgive her for taking on this Spiderman on Broadway thing and just hope that it turns out better than it sounds...

If anyone can make it work, it's her. Look what she did with Titus Andronicus.
