I absolutely love this story. Linda Sanchez, a Congresswoman from California, is pregnant... and *GASP* single!!!
She is only the 8th congresswoman to have a baby while in office, but the first to be single while having said baby. I think my favorite part of this, though, is that she says that she and her guy are "unofficially engaged."
What I DON'T like, however, is this quote from an LA Times reporter:
how might Sanchez's pregnancy play out in her district, which is 61 percent Latino? The national Latina teenage pregnancy rate is twice the country's average. Could a teenager point to her and say, 'If she can do it, why can't I?'Seriously?! Why on earth would a teenage girl look to a 39-year-old Congresswoman simply because they are of the same heritage? What a load of bullpoop.
But, go on with your bad self Linda Sanchez! Best of luck from little old me.

Or why wouldn't a teenage latina look at the congresswoman and think, "I could be a politician, too" rather than focus soley on the pregnancy?

That's pretty great (not the teenagers thinking it's cool to be pregnant comment, which is just stupid). Kudos to her!

Olivia, certainly one would hope that young Latinas would think that, and I'm confident that they will. I've been hearing a lot of Latina names thrown around lately in Congress and just as politicians in general, so hopefully it will start sending a positive message to these girls.
