I suppose that technically Shakira is still pretty popular, so it might seem strange to dedicate my Blast from the Past to her. BUT, I miss the old Shakira. Not that La Tortura or Hips Don't Lie or any of that is bad. It just doesn't move me the way my old Shaki Shaki used to.
The funny thing about Shakira back in the day is that my parents kept asking me why I liked her and tried to figure out if I understood the depth of her lyrics. It seems they found her objectionable, which, of course, made me love her even more because each time I listened to her it was like a small rebellion.
The thing is that I still have no idea why they didn't want me to listen to her.
Because she sang about the b.s. pressure we put on women to be a certain way? Because she sang about premarital sex and abortion? Because she sang about how screwed up the world is, hinting that we might be letting God down? Oh... I see... Well, I don't care. She's a genius to me and I'm thankful that I was smart enough to figure it out then.
Anyway, so here's one of my all-time favorites. It's hard to choose just one because the entire ¿Dónde están los ladrones? album shakes my soul. Inevitable is absolutely beautiful. It's so stripped down and honest that you can't help but get wrapped up in it. I still get choked up almost every time I start belting it out. Sorry for the readers who don't speak Spanish, but I did find a couple of rough translations. They're not very good, to be honest, but at least you kind of know what the song is about. Enjoy.
UPDATE: I updated some of the links so you get lyrics and videos whenever I found them.

I love her first CD. My favorite was The One. Still know all the words :-)

I discovered Pies Descalzos in high school, and have loved Shakira ever since. She's better than Alanis, another early favorite of mine.

Habladora, this is where you and I must go down different paths! I think early Shakira is loads better than Alanis. But Alanis has really grown as an artist, IMO, while Shakira has stayed about the same.
Shakira is working on a new album, though, so I'm looking forward to that!!

Well, OK, I'll admit I've been disappointed with a lot of Shakira's recent stuff. Its pop. But... (as I wrote about long ago) she's politically active in some cool ways, and I've still got a soft spot for her.
