So here's the list I mentioned a few days ago, First Lady Laura Bush's 25 Books to Read Before You're 25:
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain)
Atonement (Ian Mcewan)
Bless Me, Ultima (Rudolfo Anaya)
The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoyevsky)
Ethan Frome (Edith Wharton)
Flannery O'Connor: The Complete Stories (Flannery O'Connor)
The French Lieutenant's Woman (John Fowles)
The Heart of the Matter (Graham Greene)
I, Claudius (Robert Graves)
Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte)
A Lesson Before Dying (Ernest J. Gaines)
The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint-Exupery)
My Antonia (Willa Cather)
Mornings on Horseback (David McCullough)
Music for Chameleons (Truman Capote)
The Optimist's Daughter (Eudora Welty)
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
The Razor's Edge (Somerset Maugham)
Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books (Azar Nafisi)
Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier)
The Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk Kidd)
Ship of Fools (Katherine Anne Porter)
Siddhartha (Herman Hesse)
Sophie's Choice (William Styron)
War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy)
There you have it. Habladora mentioned Crime and Punishment, which I've never read; does anybody else have any ideas for my 26th book?
Other greats that aren't on this list but I'd recommend: Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde).

-The Kite Runner
-A Thousand Splendid Suns
(both by Khaled Hosseini)
-High Fidelity- Nick Hornby
(quick read, dry humor...I think you'll like it)
I'll think of more as I remember them but I love these and hope you enjoy.

Ditto on anything by Hosseini and Hornby. Hornby's my favorite author.
And by the way, does Laura Bush know that a fair portion of the plot in Atonement is centered around the word "cunt"? She's quite the hooligan.
